Algae are a diverse group of plants which are common in both freshwater and marine waters. Cyanobacteria ( blue green algae )is often included in this group but is not an algae. Some algae are highly toxic and must be treated with due care. The marine fishing industry must monitor algal blooms to ensure their produce is not affected. Mussels and oysters tend to bioaccumulate toxins easily as they feed on algal taxa, whilst larger fish species must be checked for other bioaccumulating algal toxins.
Such algae pose risks to potable water treatment plants with dissolved toxins flowing through to the drinking water if not treated adequately. Algae can also block up filters and water lines across all industries costing many millions of dollars in maintenance .
Algae come in many forms and can grow almost everywhere they can have permanent moisture. The phytoplankton are the most prolific form of algae as they are free floating and can cover huge sections of the oceans.
It is important to know what species of algae are in the water that you may be using either for private use or heavy industrial uses. The field of algae testing is known as phycology and phycologists work in a highly specialised field with many years of University and on job training to become competent.
